This week's photo is of a lonely bench sitting next to an old bath or pond, in the ancient ruins of Pompeii, Italy. The Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed in 79AD when the nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted. The catastrophic eruption sent huge waves of heat and ash into the city, instantly killing its [...]

Photos: Statue Street Performers in Italy

I absolutely love the culture in Italy, from the food to the art, I just always want to be out and about wandering the streets. There are a lot of buskers in Italy; nearly every city and town that I went through had someone playing an instrument or doing some other type of interesting performance. [...]

Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy

Something that I love about Italy in general are its amazing piazzas, and Piazza Navona is one of the best in Rome. Standing in the place of the ancient Roman Stadium of Domitian, the piazza has kept the long shape of the original building. Piazza Navona was built up to what it is today during [...]

The Medieval Town of San Gimignano, Italy

After visiting the beautiful old town of Siena the day before, I was excited to continue on the medieval path through Tuscany to the small town of San Gimignano. Like many towns in the area, it originated as an Etruscan village but was built up into the town it is today during the middle ages. [...]

Photo of the week: Venice Canal in Venice, Italy

This week's travel photo is of a typical canal view in Venice, Italy. There are around 150 Venice canals to explore in this fascinating city. Each one I saw seemed to have something interesting to see. One of my favourite things to do in Venice is to just wander the streets and get lost. You [...]

Photo of the week: Piazza Venezia, Rome

The Piazza Venezia is one of the busiest intersections in Rome. The piazza is named after Cardinal Venezia, who built his palace (Palazzo Venezia) adjacent to it in the 15th Century. At one end of the piazza stands the magnificent Vittorio Emanuele II Monument next to Capitoline Hill and the Roman Forum.

Siena’s Historic Centre

Siena is an old medieval city in the heart of Tuscany, Italy. Although the history of Siena dates back to the Etruscan era at around 900-500BC, the city didn't gain importance until after Roman rule. Siena flourished when it became independent in the 12th century and the old centre has been well preserved since that time. [...]
