Today’s travel photo is of an old 18th century farmhouse in Marie Antoinette’s Estate at Versailles, France. Marie Antoinette, Queen of France at the time, wasn’t fond of the court at Versailles. She much preferred the country life, so in 1783, she ordered the construction of her own secluded estate, with her own small palace and gardens. The gardens, she had designed to resemble the country of which she was so fond of – farmhouses, vegetable gardens, trees and ponds.
Although this is a far lesser visited part of Versailles (as most people stick to the main palace and immediate gardens) I really enjoyed this part of my exploration of the huge estate. It gave me a chance to escape the crowds and wander peacefully through the French countryside. In a way, I can see why Marie Antoinette essentially wanted the same thing.
Oh wow, it looks beautiful and so ‘french’
Yes, it is easy to tell where it is, isn’t it? Very French.
Very nice where about is this?
…it is at the Palace of Versailles in France, just outside of Paris. This photo is from the gardens in Marie Antoinette’s Estate.
This farmhouse is gorgeous! Simple, yet elegant. Will have to add this to our list of destinations.
It was nice wandering the gardens. I highly recommend it 🙂
Beautiful,I love these! I am going to post a link on facebook! Its a have to share!
Glad you liked the photo 🙂
I wished i could’ve known about this when i visited. Versailles is quite far from the city center and its quite expensive to visit… you’ll need 25 € to go to the castle and Marie Antoinette petit palais, but maybe in my next visit.
Hi Claudia. Yes, Versailles is quite expensive, but if you just want to visit the gardens, it is free to enter and wander around most days, apart from certain parts which are only free on certain days. Have a look at the Versailles website: http://en.chateauversailles.fr/prepare-my-visit-/single/faq-en#jardinspayants
