While on Cat Ba Island in Vietnam, we took a boat tour to explore Halong Bay and the far less crowded Han La Bay. From the dock on Cat Ba Island, we were almost immediately travelling through the beautiful limestone karst islands of Han La Bay, where there is a large floating fishing village. Make-shift houses float on the water with fish and oyster farms attached to them. These people certainly have a very beautiful place to live!
If you want to see Halong Bay, I highly recommend taking a tour from Cat Ba Island instead of Hanoi or Halong City. From here you will see Han La Bay, which is just as beautiful but without the crowds and rubbish, and you will also see some more remote areas of Halong Bay as well.
I definitely agree about doing a trip from Cat Ba. We spent a night in Cat Ba and I think it helped get us away from the crowds.

Hi Thomas. Glad to hear that you went to Cat Ba. It is certainly a relaxing place and a great base for exploring the stunning scenery around it.
Hi Dean, How are you getting around I Vietnam? Also do you have a set itinerary?
Hi Helen. I am getting around mostly by bus and public transport. I took the train once from Hanoi to Hue which was nice but twice the price of the bus. I generally make it up as I go along but my main itinerary was travelling from North to South and I knew a few places that I wanted to visit.
