On day three of my trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, we hiked up to the “Lava Tower” which is the large dark section of rock in the photo above. The Lava Tower was the highest point of the trek so far at 4600m, and it was here that many people really started to feel the affects of the altitude. I took this photo as we hiked down into the small valley before us for lunch, before hiking slowly up to the Lava Tower. From here it was a long trek down into the Great Barranco Valley where our camp was located. The ever present snow capped Kibo Peak made for some really beautiful views along the way.
This is right about where I started to feel intensely sick. I was taking malaria pills thinking that they were my Diamox. I made it to about 1,600 vertical feet from the top… just couldn’t go any more. An amazing experience nonetheless!
Did you have an incredible sunset the night before at the Shira camp? I’ve never seen anything like it. My pic is the header for my blog, http://www.worldwanderlusting.com.
Great content on here. It looks like you’re doing some incredible things. I’ll keep track of you.

Hi Brad. It’s a shame that you didn’t make it to the top but it is certainly an amazing experience to get anywhere on the mountain let alone that close to the top. I’m lucky that I don’t have too much trouble with the altitude and I didn’t take any Diamox while I was on the mountain. Lot’s a water and a nice slow pace is the key.
I did have a beautiful sunset at Shira Camp and also from Barafu Camp. Even more amazing was the sunrise from the summit. Kili is a beautiful place! cheers.
