Although we didn’t like Phuket at all on our trip to Thailand, the one day that we spent out exploring nearby Phang Nga Bay left us with some great memories. The bay is dotted with tiny limestone karst islands with hidden coves and beaches, and it’s waters are clean and inviting, making it a very picturesque place to explore.
This photo is of the Muslim Fishing Village on the tiny island of Koh Panyee. The entire village is built on stilts out over the shallow sea next to the tall cliffs of the island, and it’s 1500 residents are all descendants of the original two Indonesian families that settled on the island over 200 years ago. The village relies heavily on fishing, although tourism is now a major part of it’s economy. Most tours to Pha Nga Bay will stop here for lunch before exploring some of the other islands in the area.
After lunch we had enough time to wander through it’s market which sells a lot of pearls that are harvested in the area, and then found our way to Koh Panyee’s school who’s classrooms probably have the best views in the world.
I found that I really didn’t have enough time to explore the village properly, so if I ever go again, I will probably try and spend the whole day there.
Cool photo, Dean. Great views from the classroom, but I guess if you’re there everyday the novelty soon wears off!
