As we hiked along the gradual climb from our lunch stop at Karanga Camp on Mount Kilimanjaro, we slowly made our way up a ridge as the air became thinner and thinner towards our base camp at Barafu Camp. As we got to the top of the ridge, I had my first view of the second highest peak on Mount Kilimanjaro, Mawenzi Peak. Although it is dwarfed by the gigantic Kibo Peak towering above it, Mawenzi Peak is still over 5000m above sea level, and it was quite an impressive sight as it towers above the alpine desert plain below it.
I took this photo from Barafu Camp which sits at about 4550m, and I spent the late afternoon watching the sunset from well above the clouds – another sight that I will never forget.
