This week’s travel photo is of the face of a golden Buddha Statue at Wat Pho in Bangkok, Thailand. Wat Pho is famous for it’s 45m long reclining Buddha and is a must see on any visit to Bangkok.
More about Wat Pho
Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is one of Bangkok’s most historic and significant temples, renowned for its grandeur and cultural heritage. Dating back to the Ayutthaya period, it was originally a small temple before King Rama I expanded and rebuilt it in the late 18th century, making it one of the first royal temples in the newly established capital. The temple is best known for its massive 46-meter-long Reclining Buddha, which symbolizes the Buddha’s passing into Nirvana. Under King Rama III, Wat Pho became Thailand’s first public university, with stone inscriptions teaching subjects such as medicine, history, and Thai massage. Even today, it remains the center of traditional Thai massage, with an onsite school offering treatments and training. Adorned with intricate murals, golden chedis, and over 1,000 Buddha images, Wat Pho stands as a remarkable testament to Thailand’s spiritual and artistic heritage.
Great photo from a great temple. I was just there this week and really enjoyed it.
Thanks Jim. Wat Pho is an interesting temple. What did you think of Bangkok?
Great photo 🙂 I love walking around temples in Asia and seeing all the golden Buddhas!
Thanks Kara! I share your love for the temples. I can never get sick of them! 🙂 Cheers
I love the close-up photo! There’s a lot of details just on the head of this statue
I’m glad you liked it Brock. I was amazed at how detailed the Buddha statues are in Thailand
Scott and I never checked out the big buddha statues in Bangkok. I’ve seen some cool photos of them though.
This particular statue is actually quite small, and is in a huge line of identical ones lining a wall in the temple. But there are so many interesting statues of all sizes to see in Bangkok.
Great photo! Heading to Bangkok later this year, and really looking forward to it!
Thanks Ellen! I hope you have a great time. I’m heading back to Bangkok myself in a couple of months. I can’t wait! 🙂
