Queen Mary Falls in Queensland, Australia

This week’s travel photo is of Queen Mary Falls in Southeast Queensland, Australia. Visiting the 40m high waterfall makes for a nice day trip from Brisbane, and there is a nice walking track that goes along the top of the falls, before winding its way down to the bottom and climbing back up the other side of the gorge.

How to visit Queen Mary Falls

Located in Main Range National Park, approximately two hours southwest of Brisbane, Queen Mary Falls is best accessed by car, with ample parking available near the entrance. It’s a really scenic drive through farmland and forest. I like to do a day trip loop, starting with the drive from Brisbane to Boonah where I stop for coffee. I then follow the road to Queen Mary Falls before continuing on to Killarney (a nice country town to stop for lunch). From there I continue on to Warwick and back to Brisbane via the Cunningham Highway which goes through the very scenic Cunningham’s Gap.

From the car park at Queen Mary Falls, visitors can follow a well-maintained walking track that leads to the falls. The Queen Mary Falls Circuit is an easy 2 km loop trail, taking around 40 minutes to complete, and offers multiple viewpoints of the 40-meter cascade. For those wanting a closer look, the trail descends into the gorge, providing a spectacular view from the base where you can feel the mist from the falls. Facilities at the site include picnic areas, restrooms, and a nearby café, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing day trip. The area is also home to native wildlife, including colorful bird species and wallabies, adding to the experience. For the best views and fewer crowds, it’s recommended to visit in the early morning or late afternoon.
