Every Sunday afternoon in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Rachadamnoen Rd – the main street through the Old City – is closed off to all traffic to become one big long night market. From the central area around Tha Pha Gate, stalls set up all along the road right up to Wat Phra Singh, and they sell all kinds of items ranging from clothes and crafts to souvenirs and food. The market stall owners set up in the late afternoon, and just as the sun is setting, the street that was once filled with cars and scooters is now filled with pedestrians. Locals and tourists alike come here to browse the market stalls, take a long walk while shopping and nibbling on street food along the way.
Having an extended stay in Chiang Mai, we visited the Sunday Walking Street almost every week. It wasn’t for the shopping; it was for the atmosphere, the interesting sights, and of course, the street food.

Heading to Chiang Mai? I suggest staying in the Old City where you can easily walk to everything. There are also lots of amazing restaurants here, as well as this amazing market. Search for a guest house below to see what is available.
Looks like a lot of fun. I’d especially enjoy the food. 🙂
