Vietnam is famous for its crazy traffic. I’ve been to cities in Asia such as Bangkok where the traffic jams can get ridiculous, but as I travelled through the cities in Vietnam, I realised that it is far worse.
Crossing the street in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is almost a tourist experience of its own. The traffic is so bad there that if you waited for a clear gap to comfortably cross a main road, you would probably be waiting there all day. All you can do is kind of play a real life game of “Frogger” and walk across the road one lane at a time. You just have to trust that all of the motorbikes will zoom around you. The real key is to not stop and just keep walking across the road.
There are traffic lights in the cities, however a lot of motorbikes seem to ignore them, and roundaboats and uncontrolled intersections are simply crazy. Everyone pretty much collides into a jumbled mess while beeping their horns and eventually pushing through. Aggressive is the only driving style that works.
I have had a few people ask about the traffic in Vietnam, so I shot some footage while in the two busy cities of Hanoi and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). I hope it gives you some idea of how crazy the traffic is there. Some people hate it. Personally, I love it!

Have you witnessed the crazy traffic in Vietnam or elsewhere in the world?
I thought the traffic that I am experiencing right now in my beloved country is the worse but I guess I was wrong until I read this article of yours. I really, really hate traffic especially when it is raining.
Hi Kristy. I normally hate traffic as well, but I really enjoyed the crazy traffic in Vietnam. It is like nothing I have seen before. Still, I would hate to be stuck in it while trying to get to work! 😉
[…] points, particularly at the busy roundabouts, I wasn’t sure if I would get through unscathed. Traffic in Vietnam is notoriously bad, especially in the large cities of Saigon and Hanoi, and many parts of Nha Trang […]
Oh that’s nothing. You should go to Manila, Philippines where a supposed to be one hour drive turns into three hours. And don’t let me get started during rush hours and mall sales.
