Today’s travel photo is of Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple) in Chiang Rai, Thailand. This is a modern temple, built in the late 90’s, but it is unlike any that I have seen in Thailand. The fact that it is completely white is only the start. Its somewhat unconventional artwork is what really makes it stand out, and it is something that you really have to see in person to appreciate. The outside has some quite horrific demon symbolism, while the interior of the viharn contains artwork with pop culture references. What ever you think of the art, this temple is certainly stunning and a must see in Chiang Rai.
Buddhism is a religion indigenous to the Indian subcontinent that encompasses a variety of traditions, beliefs and practices largely based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, who is commonly known as the Buddha, meaning “the awakened one”. The Buddha lived and taught in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE.[1] He is recognized by Buddhists as an awakened or enlightened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end their suffering (dukkha) through the elimination of ignorance (avidyā) by way of understanding and the seeing of dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda) and the elimination of desire (taṇhā), and thus the attainment of the cessation of all suffering, known as the sublime state of nirvāņa.
Artwork of Wat Rong Khun is so creative and amazing. I really impressed from this white temple’s artwork and wish to visit during my next thailand tour.
