When it comes to travel in Australia, South Australia tends to get left out a lot. Most people are drawn to the Eastern States, the Red Centre and even the rugged North. Places like the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Harbour, The Great Ocean Road, Uluru and Kakadu are all amazing places, so what does South Australia have to offer? Well, after recently driving across the state to head into Western Australia, I can tell you that South Australia has a lot more to offer than you think, and I only saw a small part of it.
From the moment that I entered the state in the east, I could tell that South Australia was going to be very different to the Eastern States. I drove along the Coorong to where the mighty Murray River exits into the sea. Along the Murray are picturesque river towns such as Mannum, where old paddle steamers still run along the river. From here the Adelaide hills rise up, giving the perfect climate for wine growing, and the Barossa Valley, full of beautiful old historic towns, is the best wine region in Australia.
Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, is on the other side of the hills, and heading north from here takes you along the coast where you can either continue heading north to explore the ruggedly beautiful Flinders Ranges, or head west to see the beautiful coastline of the Eyre Peninsula. The far west of the state is the harsh and treeless Nullarbor Plain, where tall cliffs tower over the Great Australian Bight.
I only had a taste of what South Australia has to offer as I travelled across the state, and I was surprised at how much there is to do and see. South Australia Tourism currently have some videos out about some sights to see and things to do in the state. Here’s one about the Central Market in Adelaide, another place that I haven’t been to that sounds really interesting.
Don’t write South Australia off when you travel to Australia. It has a lot to offer!
This is a sponsored post but opinions are my own.
Adelaide in summer is amazing. The city is just so alive. When living there going to semaphore beach at 9pm and it is still daylight was a highlight. People having late picnics on the beach. Just like heaven.
Hey Shanette, thanks for the comment 🙂 Daylight at 9pm? That sounds pretty cool. I haven’t been able to explore Adelaide yet so I will have to take some time to have a proper visit one day.
